Add a Dripper to a Mosaic Bird Bath

    Mosaic Bird Bath

Moving water will entice and attract more wild birds to your yard!

These days, several reasonably priced items that create moving water are available for you to add to a birdbath.  We have an old mosaic bird bath that has a copper dripper in it, and birds flock to it!  Hummingbirds can be seen bathing under the “drips”  when larger birds aren’t around.

Other easy ways of adding moving include water wigglers and leaf misters.  Butterflies and warblers enjoy the fine mist, and are seen daily at our two misters.Water Wigglers

The misters are versatile and can be used in a birdbath, staked in the ground, or hung from the deck or front porch, like we use ours.  Add moving water to your habitat and watch the tremendous increase in wild bird species and their numbers.  Another advantage of having moving water in your bird bath is that mosquitoes can not lay their eggs…just can’t happen in moving water.

So now you’ve seen some moving water in our own yard, maybe that’s why bird food must be rationed…they eat us out of house and home!  Hope you’ve gotten some aquatic ideas for your feathered friends too, they’ll surely appreciate it!

A Glass Bird Feeder Does Double Duty

    Glass Bird Feeder

Some wild bird items can actually do double duty, they’ll serve more than one purpose.  You can change things around according to season, thus attracting more feathered friends.  In summer time, simple fresh water serves as a magnet for wild birds.  Birdbaths will attract some birds who don’t even bother with feeders.

This glass bird feeder for example, will hold any kind of seed, suet, nuggets, fruit, or anything else you may offer wild birds.  The beauty is that it can also be used as a hanging birdbath in warmer months, attracting a whole new set of birds not previously seen at the feeder.

    Thats double-duty!

    Thistle Feeders…Not Just for Finches!

Thistle FeedersYou can attract a great variety of songbirds with thistle feeders.  Thistle, also called Nyjer seed resembles grains of wild rice, and is coveted by American Goldfinches for its high fat and protein content.  Other songbirds who will feast at your thistle feeders include: House and Purple Finches, Towhees, Pine Siskins, Juncos and vibrant Indigo Buntings, as pictured at left.  Another great benefit of feeding thistle seed is that it has been heated to prevent germination, so sprouting weeds and grass below your feeder is not even an issue!

Mixing Nyjer with finely chopped sunflower hearts reduces mess in the yard and patio.  Also, Pine Siskins and others prefer this to straight thistle seed.  Commercial Finch mixes are readily available as well for use in thistle feeders.
