Add Bird Baths…for So Many Reasons!

Forget the old, cumbersome concrete baths of yesterday! They tend to crack over time, they’re harder to clean, and they weigh a ton!

Today, bird baths can be works of art for your yard. Unique yard decor in vibrant colors and durable materials, that hold up well and are much easier to clean. Plus they’re the absolute best bird attractors.

More than pretty yard pieces, bird baths are the best way to attract more songbirds. Many who don’t bother with houses or feeders will visit bird baths. In fact, a fresh water source is the number one way to attract birds. The key is in keeping the water fresh for feathered friends. Every few days should be sufficient for cleanings.

Whether a pedestal, hanging, or deck-mounted bath, pick one that you know will be easy to maintain, as it will benefit birds and your viewing experience. Another factor is knowing if you’ll need a bird bath heater during cold months, as a bird’s need for fresh water is not seasonal…it’s year-round.

Try Birdbath Accessories and See the Difference!

birdbathsThe single most effective way to attract birds to your yard is with a birdbath. Feathered friends who may never visit a feeder or use a birdhouse will always be tempted with a fresh water source. Especially in winter, during frigidĀ birdbathtemperatures when most shallow water sources tend to freeze over, a birdbath heater or deicer may be a life saver for many birds. Newer models, like the Heated Rock, or Matted versions are safe for all types of birdbaths too.

During warmer months, moving water is where it’s at! When birds catch a glimpse of the gentle ripples produced by a water wiggler, or the slow drip of a birdbath dripper, it’s like a visual magnet. Birdbath fountains will attract hummingbirds and many others too. They’re aesthetically pleasing in any environment, and make for excellent, long lasting gifts that will be used daily. birdbath

Leaf Misters are also wildly popular during warmer months. Butterflies and warblers love the gentle spray, and can be seen flitting back and forth through the mist. Hummingbirds adore these too. You can get creative with placement of these misters by staking them in the ground, attaching them to a bracket of your porch or deck, or the basic branch placement in a tree or shrub.

One of the other great advantages of having moving water in your birdbath is that mosquitoes can not lay their eggs, thus reducing the overall population in your yard.

Birdbaths at Ground and Higher Levels

Merry ChristmasWhen setting up birdbaths in your backyard habitat, pay attention to all your colorful friends, not just the obvious ones. Birdbaths are extremely important as they provide fresh water for both drinking and bathing. And they help attract more birds as well, increasing both the variety and quantity of visitors.birdbaths

In our habitat we have both a high and low bath, allowing birds with a preference to chose their favorite. Some birds prefer to drink and bathe at a ground bath, while others prefer a higher platform. By having two birdbaths you satisfy both groups of feathered friends. Be sure and add drippers or water wigglers to move the surface of the water; that keeps mosquitoes away while attracting birds to your birdbaths.

birdbathsWe also saw birds that never came around to the feeders when we put in the birdbaths and drippers. For example, the Robin is “the early bird that gets the worm,” but after she’s done eating she’ll come take a bath. They are fun to watch too; the robins can clear out the birdbaths with a few good shakes and the other birds come and argue with them when that happens.
