    Definitely Try Moving Water in Your Bird Bath

    Moving water in a bird bath is where it’s at!

    Bird baths really are the best way to attract more birds. If you’re fairly new to the wonderful hobby of backyard birding, maybe a feeder or two graces your yard now. You know it’s great when a new bird visits, and the simple fun of watching their behavior.

    By adding a bird bath, a great oasis has begun for your fathered friends. A fresh water source is a must for all bird species. Birds who may never stop at a feeder, or use a birdhouse will visit a bird bath.

    In order for birds to bathe and wade comfortably, the optimal depth is about two inches. If the bath is deeper, try placing a large rock in the center for birds to perch.

    Accessories like solar bath fountains, drippers, and water wigglers are a super way to liven up existing baths too. The sight and sound of moving water is a magnet for birds, they’ll flock to the bath! Moving water tends to stay cleaner for longer periods too. The other excellent advantage of moving water is that it thwarts mosquito population. Huh? It’s a known fact that mosquitoes can not lay eggs in moving water, so there’s no worries of standing water to act as breeding ground for the tiny pests.

When birds catch a glimpse of the gentle ripples produced by a water wiggler, or the slow drip of a birdbath dripper, it’s like a visual magnet.     Leaf Misters are also wildly popular during warmer months. Butterflies and warblers love the gentle spray, and can be seen flitting back and forth through the mist. Hummingbirds adore these too. You can get creative with placement of these misters by staking them in the ground, attaching them to a bracket of your porch or deck, or the basic branch placement in a tree or shrub.

    One of the other great advantages of having moving water in your birdbath is that mosquitoes can not lay their eggs, thus reducing the overall population in your yard.

    Bird Baths Simply Do Attract More Birds

    bird bathsSure, bird feeders attract wild birds, as do birdhouses. But unless you’ve added a fresh water source like a bird bath to your little habitat…you don’t know what you’re missing!

    Fresh water attracts more song birds, as some may not ever frequent a feeder. Add a bath accessory to create moving water, like a dripper or water wiggler, and you’ve just created an absolute bird magnet!

    Bird Baths are available in every possible shape, size, and color imaginable. The fiberglass or resin models, resist molding and scale build-up unlike their concrete cousins. The light-weight factor makes them a breeze to clean as well.  Many of these bird baths come with hollow pedestals to allow for filling with rocks or sand.  This helps to stabilize the bath, and make it more sturdy.

    Fresh water in freezing winter months is critical to wild birds.  They do not eat snow, and require fresh water for preening feathers. Dirty feathers just don’t fly right!
