Squirrels and Squirrel Baffles

Let’s face it…squirrels can ruin the joys of backyard birding in no time flat!  They can eat their weight in seed in one week, and destructive little devils… they’ll chew through feeders like tomorrow!  Squirrel Baffles that are not used correctly are useless.  They must be strategically placed to keep squirrels at bay.  After all, they are crafty little critters who can jump up to six feet high and eight feet across, just like little supermen.

The electronic squirrel baffle called the Twirl-A-Squirrel, takes the guess work out of squirrel baffle/birdfeeder placement.  This innovative little gadget allows you the complete liberty of placing bird feeders where you actually want them, and not just where squirrels can’t get to them.  A pretty important factor to take into consideration if you enjoy feeding your feathered friends and bird watching!  The Twirl-A-Squirrel is absolutely harmless to squirrels as well, the motorized baffle gently spins them to the ground when they can no longer hang on to the feeder.  Check out the video below…it’s hilarious!
It really doesn’t spin that fast…this video has been remixed, but you’ll get the jist.

Squirrel Baffle

Along with backyard birding comes the challenges of unwanted pests! Depending on the season, and time of year, it’s best to be well-armed in defending your bird feeders.  Recently, blackbirds were migrating in our area (starlings and grackles) and dear lord…they will eat you out of house and home!

The local feed store loves me :)

Seriously though, every bird feeder in our yard is set up with a squirrel baffle.  Pole mounted and hanging feeders both have them, and they work wonderfully. Effective at keeping squirrels out of the feeders.  When setting up baffles, be sure they are far enough away from any possible launching point for squirrels.  This is the most critical part of success with squirrels baffles.

By the way, the upside-down baffle above is actually an ant moat for hummingbird feeders.  Not only squirrels, but contending with ants during hummer season is a pain.  Using ant moats properly (filled with water) will eliminate the problem as ants can’t swim.  So long pests!

Squirrels: They can just about ruin your bird watching experience as you notice expensive birdseed disappearing rather quickly from bird feeders!  Their athletic abilities are uncanny to any other little wild critter, and they can eat their weight in seed in one week. Frustrating, exasperating, infuriating….until you break down and invest in a real squirrel proof bird feeder.

There are some excellent squirrel-proof feeders on the market today, many that will even look good in the yard.  They no longer require the metal cage thing, many of them are aesthetically pleasing, something you’d like to have in the yard!

squirrel baffle

If you’re tired of pesky squirrels raiding bird feeders, stealing seed, and making messes, it might be a good time to invest a few bucks in a squirrel baffle.

When used properly, baffles really work in deterring squirrels and keeping them out of feeders.  They’re available in hanging styles, pole-mount, or even post-mounted styles too.  So, no matter what type of feeder you may be using, there is a baffle to accommodate it.

The one thing to remember is feeder placement, as squirrels can jump like crazy! If your feeder is pole, or post mounted, the bottom of the baffle should be at least 4 feet from the ground.  If you have a hanging bird feeder, squirrel’s horizontal jumping can thwart your efforts if the feeder is not placed at lesquirrel baffleast 8 feet away from any possible “launch spot”.

This goes for pole mounted feeders too.  Remember, squirrels can jump high and sideways! Place all feeders with baffles far enough away from any possible “launch site” and you’ll achieve success at deterring squirrels from feeders.

The war with squirrels!  We’ve all been there and have spent so much time and effort trying to outsmart the furry critters.  There’s even been books written on the subject.  If you enjoy backyard birding, you’re likely all too familiar with this scenario.  There are hundreds of squirrel proof feeders on the market today, and some work better than others.  Many claim to be a squirrel proof bird feeder, but they just don’t stand up to the promise.

Some reputable manufacturers of these feeders include Droll Yankee and Duncraft, they have perfected the science!  The Twirl-A Squirrel is also a popular item in deterring squirrels, as they can’t hang on to steal the seed, and soon give up.  It’s hilarious to watch and very effective too.  If you’re tired of the war with squirrels, a good squirrel proof bird feeder might be the answer,

Squirrel Proof Bird FeederWhen it comes to bird feeders and squirrels, most folks will say good luck!  But with a little attention to feeder placement and the use of squirrel baffles or a squirrel proof bird feeder, you can minimize pesky squirrels at your feeders and enjoy the birds a whole lot more.

Protect your bird feeders in the yard from squirrels with these easy tips:

First, feeders need to be at least eight feet from any horizontal launching point.

Next, the bottom of the bird feeder should be at least four and one half feet off the ground.  When using a pole or post, a squirrel baffle must be placed right below the feeder to ensure non-entry for squirrels.

For hanging feeders, make sure the baffle is at least one-third larger in circumference than the feeder.

If you are feeding on your deck or patio, and don’t have adequate room for a baffle, then a squirrel proof bird feeder should be used.  Many models on the market today have effective and ingenious ways of combating squirrels.

Squirrel Proof Bird FeedersThere are tons of bird feeders on the market which claim to be squirrel proof.  Many of them are successful at keeping pesky squirrels from raiding bird feeders…while others just don’t make the cut.  Then there’s also the aesthetic to consider.  This feeder will hang in your yard, so it would be nice to have one that looks good too.  Sometimes the metal caged look is not ideal in a delicate flower garden.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders have come a long way since those metal caged types.  Sleek styling combined with functionality expands the choices for some great feeders.  The Sky Cafe, for example, is an excellent choice for a squirrel resistant feeder as it looks good and keeps seed protected from not only squirrels, but the elements too.  Plus, this great feeder is available in may options such as colors, and has seed dividers to offer birds a variety in one single feeder.Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders Consider the Sky Cafe or Mandarin Feeder for your next squirrel proof bird feeder.

Feed the Birds

Feeding birds-not squirrels…easier said than done.  Most folks who feed wild birds would agree, their gravity defying acrobatics can be infuriating.  A squirrel can eat their weight in seed in one week, they can jump up to six feet high and 8 feet across, and they can run 20 mph.  A pesky backyard enemy who can destroy the pleasures of wild bird feeding.

How can you protect existing bird feeders from squirrels?  Baffles and capsaicin are two effective accessories.

With hanging squirrel baffles, make sure the baffle is one-third larger in circumference than the feeder.  Be sure the bottom of the feeder is at least four and one half feet off the ground, and the feeder is at least eight feet away from trees, shepherds hooks, or any possible launching spots for squirrels.  If using a pole mounted, or 4×4 post mount squirrel baffle, make sure the bottom of this baffle is at least four and one half feet off the ground.  Make sure the post or pole is at least eight feet away from any sideways launching spot.  Also, be sure this feeder is at least ten feet away from taller launching spots, like trees or houses.  Capsaicin is effective in deterring squirrels, as they despise the hot sensation that comes from the peppers, but birds do not taste it.  Available in commercial mixes, you can easily make your own with cayenne pepper.  A few teaspoons mixed lightly with any bird seed …but be careful!  It’s painful to breathe the fumes, it burns your eyes, and if it gets on your skin, wash hands immediately.  Capsaicin has been scientifically proven safe for wild birds.

If your backyard landscaping will not accommodate this type of set up, you may wish to buy a new squirrel proof bird feeder that will win the war for you!  There are many models available that work well; Droll Yankee, Duncraft, and Heritage Farms are well known for their high quality squirrel proof products, and even guarantee them.  Hanging caged feeders are effective, but you may not really care for a metal or galvanized design in your garden.  The new Mandarin squirrel proof bird feeders are attractive in any landscape with their sleek design and large clear view baffle.  Made from 100% recycled plexiglass, they protect feeders and houses, and also have a lifetime warranty.  This model can hang or be pole mounted, and protects seed from rain, snow and squirrels beautifully!
