A sure way to attract birds is with water, and an even better way is with moving water! The sound of a “drip-drip” or the sight of ripples across a birdbath is an absolute visual magnet to many species of songbirds. Moving water in a bird bath is where it’s at!

Bird baths really are the best way to attract more birds. If you’re fairly new to the wonderful hobby of backyard birding, maybe a feeder or two graces your yard now. You know it’s great when a new bird visits, and the simple fun of watching their behavior.

By adding a bird bath, a great oasis has begun for your fathered friends. A fresh water source is a must for all bird species. Birds who may never stop at a feeder, or use a birdhouse will visit a bird bath.

In order for birds to bathe and wade comfortably, the optimal depth is about two inches. If the bath is deeper, try placing a large rock in the center for birds to perch.

Accessories like solar bath fountains, drippers, and water wigglers are a super way to liven up existing baths too. The sight and sound of moving water is a magnet for birds, they’ll flock to the bath! Moving water tends to stay cleaner for longer periods too. The other excellent advantage of moving water is that it thwarts mosquito population. Huh? It’s a known fact that mosquitoes can not lay eggs in moving water, so there’s no worries of standing water to act as breeding ground for the tiny pests.

birdbathsThe single most effective way to attract birds to your yard is with a birdbath. Feathered friends who may never visit a feeder or use a birdhouse will always be tempted with a fresh water source. Especially in winter, during frigid birdbathtemperatures when most shallow water sources tend to freeze over, a birdbath heater or deicer may be a life saver for many birds. Newer models, like the Heated Rock, or Matted versions are safe for all types of birdbaths too.

During warmer months, moving water is where it’s at! When birds catch a glimpse of the gentle ripples produced by a water wiggler, or the slow drip of a birdbath dripper, it’s like a visual magnet. Birdbath fountains will attract hummingbirds and many others too. They’re aesthetically pleasing in any environment, and make for excellent, long lasting gifts that will be used daily. birdbath

Leaf Misters are also wildly popular during warmer months. Butterflies and warblers love the gentle spray, and can be seen flitting back and forth through the mist. Hummingbirds adore these too. You can get creative with placement of these misters by staking them in the ground, attaching them to a bracket of your porch or deck, or the basic branch placement in a tree or shrub.

One of the other great advantages of having moving water in your birdbath is that mosquitoes can not lay their eggs, thus reducing the overall population in your yard.

bird bathsSure, bird feeders attract wild birds, as do birdhouses. But unless you’ve added a fresh water source like a bird bath to your little habitat…you don’t know what you’re missing!

Fresh water attracts more song birds, as some may not ever frequent a feeder. Add a bath accessory to create moving water, like a dripper or water wiggler, and you’ve just created an absolute bird magnet!

Bird Baths are available in every possible shape, size, and color imaginable. The fiberglass or resin models, resist molding and scale build-up unlike their concrete cousins. The light-weight factor makes them a breeze to clean as well.  Many of these bird baths come with hollow pedestals to allow for filling with rocks or sand.  This helps to stabilize the bath, and make it more sturdy.

Fresh water in freezing winter months is critical to wild birds.  They do not eat snow, and require fresh water for preening feathers. Dirty feathers just don’t fly right!

Bied Bath

A great way to attract more species of wild birds is to have a fresh water source. An even better attractor is moving water!  Adding a fountain or dripper to your bird bath will greatly increase the number and species of feathered friend visitors.  It’s a known fact that moving water is like a visual magnet to wild birds.  There are lots of options available to create moving water in a birdbath.  You can even make your own dripper from a simple plastic milk jug (with a tiny hole) hung above the bath.

Whether a dripper, bird bath fountain, water wiggler, or mister, birds will flock to a water source in action.  The other great advantage is that mosquitos can not lay eggs in moving water.  Thus reducing their population and the liklihood of spreading the west nile virus.  Also, bird baths will stay cleaner longer when using some type of agitation or aeration in them.

Mosaic Bird Bath

Moving water will entice and attract more wild birds to your yard!

These days, several reasonably priced items that create moving water are available for you to add to a birdbath.  We have an old mosaic bird bath that has a copper dripper in it, and birds flock to it!  Hummingbirds can be seen bathing under the “drips”  when larger birds aren’t around.

Other easy ways of adding moving include water wigglers and leaf misters.  Butterflies and warblers enjoy the fine mist, and are seen daily at our two misters.Water Wigglers

The misters are versatile and can be used in a birdbath, staked in the ground, or hung from the deck or front porch, like we use ours.  Add moving water to your habitat and watch the tremendous increase in wild bird species and their numbers.  Another advantage of having moving water in your bird bath is that mosquitoes can not lay their eggs…just can’t happen in moving water.

Wild Bird Mister

So now you’ve seen some moving water in our own yard, maybe that’s why bird food must be rationed…they eat us out of house and home!  Hope you’ve gotten some aquatic ideas for your feathered friends too, they’ll surely appreciate it!

heated bird bath

To get more bang for your buck, heated birdbaths make sense!

A heated bird bath affords year-round use, especially in crucial winter months when water sources for wild birds tend to become scarce and freeze up.  Simply by unplugging the cord and tucking it away, you have a bath for spring, summer, and fall seasons too.

The ground birdbath pictured above is heated and features a copper dripper.  I’ve had one of these in my yard for about 7 or 8 years now, and it’s still going strong!

By adding moving water to your bird bath through the use of drippers, misters, or bubblers, you can attract even more wild birds.  Those who may not visit bird feeders will flock to a fresh water source, and the dripping motion, or spirals from a water wiggler act like a magnet for songbirds.  You’ll see a greater variety of wild birds with a fresh water source in your yard, so make it available year-round for your feathered friends.

If you enjoy backyard birding, and want to attract a greater variety of feathered friends, there’s so much more available than just birdhouses and feeders.

Moving water is like a magnet for wild birds, and it attracts many species who won’t even visit feeders.  By adding a fountain, mister or dripper to your birdbath, it creates sights and sounds that are guaranteed to bring more wild birds.  Plus the soothing sounds of moving water are enjoyed by many folks too, as it’s relaxing.

Nesting Material is another way to attract more wild birds.  Many birds do not nest in birdhouses, but will use nesting material to make their home in your trees or thicket, or even in your plants, and near your house.

The Seed Hoop for example, is a bird feeder attachment that will reduce waste below your feeder.  But it also creates a platform below your bird feeder, attracting birds who will not perch at a feeder.  Ground feeding birds too will take advantage of platform feeders.

So, if you’re new to backyard birding, just know there are many wild bird accessories beyond feeders and houses that will successfully attract more feathered friends!

Water-Wiggler

With a funky space ship-like design, this little wild bird accessory will definitely attract more songbirds to your yard.  It is called a water wiggler, and it does just what it’s name says!  Moving water is a visual magnet for birds, attract more songbirds and keep them around.  You can create moving water simply, without power cords, or faucet hook-ups.  With 2 batteries, the water wiggler utilizes an agitator to create constant ripples in a bird bath.

Another excellent benefit of these little gadgets, is that mosquitos can not lay eggs in moving water.  This helps prevent the spread of the west nile virus.  So, if stagnant water is a concern, it need not be anymore.  Inexpensive and user-friendly, the water wiggler is a wonderful addition to any bird bath.
